Madison, WI is the best geographical location for the universities and colleges in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). All potential qualifying schools are 60-370 miles of the greater Madison, WI area and it's centrally located for both conferences. Sun Prairie, WI split to two high schools (East & West) during the 2022-2023 scholastic year and they built an incredible stadium, the Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium. The Sun Prairie Tourism Commission and City of Sun Prairie offered to be the bowl game host for the foreseeable future.

The Isthmus Bowl is different from a typical bowl game where the teams are normally invited, like Division I (FBS) bowl games. This is a game where the potential participating teams qualify for through conference standings, final record, Pool A, and Pool C (at-large bids) to the NCAA tournament. The Isthmus Bowl invites the best team from the CCIW and WIAC that doesn't qualify for the D3 football tournament.

Downtown Madison, Wisconsin is on an "isthmus," which is a narrow strip of land with water on both sides, forming a link between the two larger areas of land. Hence, the Isthmus Bowl was born due to the connection with downtown Madison. Although the game is played in a fast-growing and developing suburb (Sun Prairie), the game will continue to be called the Isthmus Bowl.
